Grout Calculator — Free Online Tool

Grout is the forgotten line item in every tile project — until you're mid-job with a half-empty bag. This grout calculator converts your tiled square footage into bag counts for standard installations.

What is the Grout Calculator?

A 10-pound bag of grout covers roughly 50 square feet of typical floor tile with 1/4-inch joints. Wider joints and smaller tiles eat more grout (more joint length per square foot), while large tiles with tight joints use less — the 10% buffer in this calculator covers normal variation.

Choose sanded grout for joints 1/8 inch and wider, unsanded for narrower — the wrong type causes cracking or washout. Mix only what you can use in 30 minutes; grout waits for no one. This grout calculator rounds up to whole bags because an opened bag doesn't store well once humidity gets in.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure the tiled area in square feet.
  2. Enter it and click Calculate Grout.
  3. Choose sanded vs unsanded based on your joint width.
  4. Mix in small batches you can use within 30 minutes.

Formula

Bags = ceil( area × 1.10 ÷ 50 ) — 10-lb bags at ~50 sq ft coverage each.

Frequently asked questions

Sanded or unsanded grout — which do I need?

Sanded for joints 1/8 inch and wider; unsanded for narrower joints. This grout calculator's quantity works for either.

How much grout per square foot?

Roughly 0.2 lbs per sq ft for typical floor tile — a 10-lb bag covers ~50 sq ft.

Can I store an opened bag of grout?

Poorly — moisture ruins it. Buy fresh bags for each project phase.

Is epoxy grout worth it?

It's stain-proof and tougher, but harder to install and pricier — great for kitchens, overkill for low-traffic areas.
